In an update of its State of the Internet report, Akamai found that in the past year the financial services industry was hit with millions or tens of millions of attacks per day.

In September 2020 alone, Akamai tracked 33 million web application attacks against the financial services industry. The report found that the bad threat actors primarily used common attack paths, such as SQL injection, local file inclusion and cross-site scripting.

The report Akamai released Wednesday summarizes its main reports from October 2019 to October 2020. Another study on credential stuffing and the media industry found that attack activity on media was steady at tens of millions a day and focused primarily on account takeover.

Akamai also released a report on phishing late last year which found that more than 60 percent of all the phishing kits monitored by Akamai were active only 20 days – highlighting the quick lifecycle of phishing kits.
